How To Clean Your Cell Phone During the Flu Season

With the holiday season ending and winter just beginning, germs and viruses reach their peak. The common cold, influenza, norovirus, strep throat, COVID-19, among other viruses make their rounds this time of year. One question we all ask is how we can prevent spreading these viruses before we catch them and get sick. There are a ton of surfaces we touch every day that we have no control over-but one surface we can control is our cell phones.

It’s no surprise that viruses and germs can stay on surfaces for days to weeks. So, it’s no different when it comes to your cell phone. We touch our phones multiple times throughout the day with our hands, which are one of the dirtiest parts of our bodies. Not to mention that our cell phones end up laying around on different surfaces throughout the day. When we get a phone call and talk over the phone, we rest the phone against our face, spreading the germs to our face.

How to clean a cell phone properly is important in making sure that the germs are reduced significantly. When it comes to cleaning the phone, make sure that the astringent you are using is not being used in your home, like bleach. Never spray anything directly on the screen of the phone either. Doing so could end up ruining the coating of the cell phone’s screen.

Here is a good list to go by when cleaning your phone:

  1. Turn off the phone first
  2. If your phone is inside a case, remove the phone from the case
  3. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe the phone down
  4. Use disinfectant wipes with 70% isopropyl alcohol on the phone’s screen but avoid the speakers. Or spray cleaners onto the microfiber cloth and then wipe down the screen.
  5. Air dry for 5-10 minutes
  6. Wipe down with the microfiber cloth once more
  7. Repeat steps with the phone case

And it’s easy as that! Next time you think about cleaning down your house and disinfecting surfaces, be sure to include your cell phone. It only takes a few extra minutes. You will feel better knowing that the next time you talk on the phone, less germs and viruses will be transferred.
